In their second year of existence, the Ben Davis girls flag football team is off to a flying start.
“I feel like it’s going well so far, we started the year off strong,” coach Adonis Dix said. “We finished 2-0 on Saturday this past week. Played a tough Pike and North Lawrence team.
“We had a good showing out in the first game winning 30-6. Little bit tougher that second game definitely for sure. I think Lawrence North has a really good team this year and they’re gonna be a challenge for us. But I like how our girls responded and fought back in the game.”
The lady Giants faced a deficit the entire first half and most of the second half, but with 0:49 seconds left Julissa Reed made a great pass to Ruby Wills in the end zone and Wills came down with a catch over two defenders to help us take the lead.
“This was a huge stepping stone for our lady Giants in gaining momentum going into the remaining regular season games, which continue this Saturday at Pike versus Lawrence Central at 10:15 a.m.,” Dix said.
Dix is excited about the future.
“Goals for this team this year is we want to make sure we continue to grow and mature as a team, learn as a team, and have fun and do the right thing as a team,” Dix said.
Dix is hoping the sport becomes an official IHSAA sport in a few years.
“I hope the future of girls flag football within the next year continues to grow and goes from 27 teams to 100, and continues to emerge and be considered a national sport,” he said.
