Teens go through a lot in life alone these days. We shouldn’t be scared to go to school just to learn.
Throughout the years, there have been many school shootings, maybe not close to us but still around the world. And this week in our own city we have news of a student beaten so badly at Perry Meridian HS that the family is threatening legal action against the school district.
And even though our school hasn’t been one of the targets, many threats to Ben Davis have been made, including a recent one that prompted a letter home for our principal..
When we come to school we are supposed to feel safe, but instead when we hear a bang we have to decide whether it is a gunshot or something else. Or when we go to the bathroom and turn the corner, are we scared we might see someone holding a gun waiting?
There have been many school shootings in the U.S. alone, most recently in Georgia where at Apalachee High School four people lost their lives on September 4th to this shooting including two teachers and two students. The shooter was only 14 years old.
Why can a 14-year-old can get a hold of a gun? If a 14-year-old can, anyone can.
Many shootings happened after the incident at Apalachee High School because kids realized after someone succeeds that it is that easy to do what they have seen happen.
It is sad to see it happen, but it has become a common thing Nothing like this should be common.
We need this to change. We need a new system for schools to keep them safer for our school or any other schools. The front of our school is being rebuilt to allow for a safer entrance. Making a school safe requires all of us to pitch in. “See something say something” is an easy motto, but so effective.
The state’s new cell phone policy may be well intended, but an unattended consequence is not being able to contact home in an emergency. Simple things like this need to be addressed.
Kids should feel safe and parents should feel safe sending us to school.
