September is Suicide Prevention Month.
In downtown Indy, we have a remembrance of all those who died because of suicide by doing a walk called “Out of the darkness walk.” The walk is this Saturday and there is on-site registration.
The program starts at 2:30 p.m. and the walk begins at 3 p.m.. The location is at Military Park near the IUPUI campus.
They started this walk in 2004 and 20 years later it is still a tradition not only in Indianapolis but also in hundreds of communities around the country.
“I had a son who took his life and this walk is a reminder that suicide is a problem,” journalism teacher Tom Hayes said. “It is an emotional experience and it proves that you are not alone.”
Not only is this event to remember those who died due to one of the many reasons people end their lives. This walk is also for the people who are still fighting to stay alive.
This event gives people the courage to open up about their connections to the cause, and a platform to create a culture that’s smarter about mental health.
The suicide rate in 2022 was nearly 50,000 it went up 3% from the years before. Suicide is the 11th-ranking cause of death. There are also 100,000 deaths per population is 14.8. From the youngest age, you couldn’t even imagine that elderly people have taken their lives. Remember those who took their life and check up on the ones who are still here.
Call 988 if you feel you want to harm yourself or take your own life.
Remember you are loved and wanted here even if you feel you’re not.
