There’s very few food items as American as a grilled cheese sandwich.
Saturday is what is known as National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day so it’s a good time to examine this American classic.
First, thank you to my mother for the recipe. Now the ingredients are bread, butter or margarine, and any type of cheese. Any type of cheese will work for this, but people mainly use cheddar or sharp.
Grab two slices of bread and butter one side of the bread with your softened butter or margarine, and do the same thing for the other slice. Grab a skillet on your stovetop burner, turn it on low, and place your slice of bread butter side down. Next, grab your cheese and open it, and place one slice of it on the bread in the pan.
If you want more cheese, add more on top of the first piece of cheese. Place you’re second slice of bread on top of the cheese with the buttered side facing you. Next, turn up the heat to medium and wait for a minute or two before grabbing a spatula and flipping it to the cooked side.
Now, the crust of the grilled cheese may differ slightly in looks from person to person, depending on how long you wait. One may have a lighter crust while another may have a darker crust.
You can get it how you like it personally, but don’t get it too dark or it will be burnt, and you don’t want that. It dosen’t taste very good, trust me, unless you like the burnt taste, then go ahead. Then use you’re spatula and plate it on a plate, you can cut it in half for a cheese pull. There’s probably not much of a cheese pull, but hey, not everyone gets a cheese pull.
Now enjoy your delicious grilled cheese for lunch, dinner, or breakfast. Now I was debating writing, telling you can add meat to it, but then comes the problem, is it still a grilled cheese if you add meat to it? Google says yeah it’s a grilled cheese but it doesn’t feel right calling it a grilled cheese.
So I then read article after article, going down a rabbit hole of various sandwich types. The thing about my rabbit hole is that I still don’t have an answer if it would be called a grilled cheese or not if it has meat. I am very hungry now. Sorry for the small rant. Anyway, happy National Grilled Cheese Day.
