April is National Poetry Month, a time where people celebrate poetry. It was established in 1996 by the Academy of American Poets. It was created to promote the art that is written in poetry in the United States.
Around this time you typically see poems being shared across the internet, poets becoming more appreciated; many poets like Maya Angelou, Edgar Allan Poe, William Shakespeare, and Emily Dickinson.
One of my favorite poets is Lucille Clifton, and my favorite poem from her is ‘Eve thinking’
“it is wild country here
brothers and sisters coupling
claw and wing
groping one another “
There are many events going on during the month of April that cater to poetry in Indianapolis,
Multiple Poetry Open Mic are taking place in Irving Theater and Indy Reads (April 10th). The admission is free. So go enjoy the reading of poems and relax.
