Although both films were adapted from the same children’s book, their outcomes were very different. How the Grinch Stole Christmas has two film versions – one being made in 1966 and one being made in 2000.
People’s opinions on which film is best varies widely, because everyone has their own thoughts on what makes a good movie. I think that How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000), the live action version, is the best version of the adaptation, which was originally written by Dr. Suess.
The live action version of the film stars Jim Carrey (a famous actor and comedian), who does well to encompass the silly and evil nature of the Grinch. The story follows this character as he battles through challenges that detail why he hates Christmas and then shows how he comes to love Christmas.
This version is also longer and more detailed.
Both versions illustrate the true meaning of Christmas, which is shown as human connections, love, and/or family through the story. However, because the 2000’s version is more detailed, viewers are able to gain a deeper and better understanding of the feelings and actions of the characters, which is important when considering the target audience of a family movie. The movie teachers lessons that are easy to understand to younger viewers.
This live version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas is also just simply more entertaining as it has a more complex plotline, and therefore a better and more satisfying ending. Of course, the 1966 version is a classic and should be cherished as so, however the 2000’s version is just better.
