May is the month when we acknowledge those individuals who struggle with mental health. Mental Health Awareness Month was founded by Mental Health America in 1949.
May 15 is a day dedicated to bringing awareness. On this day it is called wear green day. People all around wear green. This is because green is the international symbol for mental health.
Green shows energy, fresh startings, and hope. This day is dedicated to raising awareness, getting educated, and promoting services.
Mental health surrounds an individual’s social well-being , emotions, and psychology. It can have an impact on someone’s everyday life.. One in 5 teenagers experience a mental health disorder in a given year. Having poor health can bring health conditions, reduce the quantity of life, and impact social life..
Health conditions can include depression and anxiety. These conditions can lead to chronic conditions. Did you know that depression can increase the chances of having Alzheimer’s, diabetes, heart disease, and stroke?
With consistent struggles with anxiety, come with mental and physical symptoms. Some examples of mental symptoms can be overthinking, feeling restless, worried, and having trouble concentrating. Physical symptoms that come with anxiety are sweating, nausea, rapid heartbeat, and trouble sleeping..
Those who have trouble with mental health reduce their quality of life. You can face low self-esteem. Going to places like the store, school, or work can feel uncomfortable. Which can lead you to not want to go. Lastly, it impacts your social life..
Having a social life is key. It helps you feel heard. Not having a social life will cause you to isolate yourself from others, even loved ones.
There are many ways to get help when facing these symptoms. Asking for help does not identify you as weak, it shows your strength. You can call or text 988 if you’re in need to talk. You can also find a therapist that suits you. They can provide help, guidance, and support.
Lastly, you can talk to someone you trust. For example a family member, a close friend, a support group, and more. Don’t forget that at Ben Davis High School we are here to help. We are here to open our ears and listen. You are important.
