Giants face tough regional opponent

Host Eagles are peaking at right time

staff report

Jason Simmons is impressed with what he sees when he watches the Zionsville football team.

“They keep coming at you and are a resilient bunch of guys,” he said. “They get better as the game goes on.”

Simmons expects his Ben Davis Giants to have their hands full on the road this Friday when they visit Zionsville for a regional title (kick off at 7 p.m.).

The two teams have taken different routes to the regional battle. Ben Davis won two sectional games by a combined 107-10 score while Zionsville had to come back to beat Brownsburg 44-41 in last weeks sectional championship games. Zionsville will be playing in its fourth regional game in the past five years, this time under first-year coach Scott Turnquist.

Simmons believes the Eagles began peaking five weeks ago when Zionsville took then-No. 1 Avon to the wire before losing on a game-deciding field goal in the final seconds. Zionsville brings a 5-6 record into the regional while Ben Davis is 7-4 and will be playing in its fourth regional game in the past six years. Zionsville and Ben Davis have only played each other once, with BD winning 34-10 in a 2011 sectional game.

The Giants beat Southport 50-10 in last weeks sectional final. The attached photo gallery is from that game.
