Coach Lisa Bugay has coached both the boys and girls volleyball teams here. She has been coaching the boys team for three years and coached the girls for two year about 10 years ago.
Bugay is guiding the boys team toward the first-ever IHSAA-sponsored state tourname, which begins in two weeks. The boys will learn their tournament draw this Sunday.
“ I wanted the boys program to start on the right foot, with the right values, hard work, respect, discipline, and a true love for the game,” Bugay said.
The boys are 3-0 in the conference and can win the conference outright with wins over Warren Central (Thursday at Warren) and North Central (May 7 at home).
For Bugay, the volleyball court was more than a court. It was a place where she learned discipline, teamwork, and how to push through challenges. As years passed coaching felt like the correct next step to take. It was going to be a way to stay connected to the game.
“While still helping others grow both as athletes and individually,” Bugay said of her love of coaching.
The state tournament is one of the biggest parts of the volleyball season. Their drawing will be taking place Sunday when the boys find out who they will be going against. The host will be Center Grove.
Bugay focuses on building their confidence by consistent preparation. Always reminding them they have put the work in and earned the right to compete. When
it comes to Sunday, Bugay said “I remind them that tournaments are a celebration of their growth and a chance to show what they’ve trained for.”
One lesson Bugay wants all her athletes to know is the power of being fearless, not the absence of fear, but the courage to face it.
“Being fearless means trusting your preparation, embracing mistakes as part of growth, and pushing past the voice that says, she said.
Bugay believes that athletes who lead with heart, compete with grit, and lift others along the way.
