Fry has outstanding freshman season

Guard Robert Fry II was named the Heart of America’s Athletic Conference freshman of the year by league coaches for his play during the 2020-21 season. Fry, a 6-foot-1 freshman from Indianapolis, Ind. (Ben Davis HS), averaged 20.1 points per game, which ranked third in the conference during the regular season. Fry also ranked third in free throw percentage (78.9) and eighth in assists (4.1). In addition, Fry averaged 4.6 rebounds and shot 42.6 percent from the floor during the season. He scored in double figures in 15 of his 17 games that he played, scored 20 or more points nine times and had a season high 32 points against Clarke (Iowa) University on Nov. 24, 2020. Fry had four games where he grabbed at least seven rebounds, and six games where he dished out at least five assists.

Michigan State (13-10, 7-10) defeated Illinois 81-72 and Ohio State 71-67 before losing 73-55 to Maryland. Aaron Henry had a team high 20 points (9 for 19, 0 for 1, 2 for 4), six rebounds, five assists, two blocked shots, two steals, and two turnovers in 39 minutes against Illinois; a team high 18 points (7 for 11, 1 for 3, 3 for 5), four rebounds, four assists, three blocked shots, two steals, and four turnovers in 33 minutes against OSU; and 11points (4 for 16, 0 for 4, 3 for 4), six rebounds, four assists, one blocked shot, one steal, and two turnovers in 36 minutes against Maryland.

Ball State (9-11, 7-8) defeated Kent State 90-71 and Central Michigan 97-91. Jalen Windham returned to action for the first time in a number of weeks, playing just one minute and missing one shot against Ball State. He has played in nine games this season, 14.6 minutes per game, and averages 4.1 points per game (13 for 42-.310, 6 for 23-.261, and 5 for 5-1.000) and has grabbed 12 rebounds, assisted on two baskets, and had nine turnovers.

Miami (11-10, 8-8) defeated Central Michigan 96-54 and Western Michigan 74-66 before losing 64-51 to Kent State. Josh Brewer played 11 minutes against CMU and had two points (1 for 3, 0 for 1, 0 for 0) and two rebounds. He did not play in the other two games.

Jeff Clayton had one rebound and one turnover for Taylor (11-14, 5-11) in a 74-66 loss to Indiana Wesleyan in their first game in the Crossroads League Tournament.

BASEBALL

Freshman Jose Guzman, making his collegiate debut pitching in relief for Cincinnati (1-5) in an 11-3 win against Western Kentucky, gave up no runs and no hits while striking out four in two complete innings The 6-4 righthander  had control problems, walking four and hitting two batters.

Central Methodist (10-2) defeated Lyon 4-0, Olivet Nazarene 9-0, and Bellevue 12-5, while losing for the first time, 7-6 to LSU-Shreveport.  CMU then split a double header with William Woods, winning 10-1 and losing 3-1.Isaiah Davis pinch ran in five of the games and scored two runs.

WOMENS BASKETBALL

Lakeland (6-5) defeated Alverno 58-36 and  Marian (WISC) 74-48 and 70-56. Brianna Jones played briefly against Alverno, but 20 minutes in the first Marian win, contributing two points (1 for 6), five rebounds, two assists, and  one steal, while committing one turnover. In the second Marian game, she had six rebounds, one assist, three steals, two turnovers, and six missed shots in 22 minutes.

Xavier (4-9, 1-8) lost 73-61 to Butler and 108-65 to Seton Hall before defeating Georgetown 58-48. Nia Clark had 13 points (4 for 16, 4 for 12, 1 for 1), one rebound, one assist, one blocked shot, one steal, and three turnovers in 32 minutes against Butler; eight points (2 for 7, 0 for 0, 4 for 5), two rebounds, one assist, and five turnovers in 23 minutes against Seton Hall; and two points (1 for 8, 0 for 1, 0 for 0 ), four assists, one steal, and two turnovers in 23 minutes against Georgetown.

Hutchinson Community College (8-2) defeated Dodge City 68-50 and Northwest Kansas 69-63. Cherrelle Newsom  had three points (1 for 2, 1 for 2, 0 for 0) in seven minutes against Dodge City; and three points (1 for 3, 1 for 3, 0 for 0), one rebound, and one assist in eight minutes against Northwest Kansas.

Toledo (10-12, 6-12) lost 69-59 to Eastern Michigan, defeated Central Michigan 72-67, and lost 88-77 to Ball State. Khera Goss had six points (2 for 5, 0 for 1, 2 for 4), one rebound, one assist, and two steals in 33 minutes against EMU; nine points (4 for 8, 0 for 1, 1 for 3), three rebounds, one assist, and one turnover in 21 minutes against CMU; and seven points (3 for 4, 1 for 1, 0 for 0), two rebounds, one assist, and three steals in 33 minutes against Ball State.

MENS TENNIS

Bellarmine lost 6-1 to Dayton and 5-2 to Youngstown. Ian Deiters lost 6-3 at No. 2 doubles to Dayton and won 6-3 at No. 2 against Youngstown.

WOMENS INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

 Simi Akinrinsola, competing for Purdue in the Big Ten indoor Championships, placed eighth of 24 in the weight throw (62-1) and 21st of 26 in the shot put 45-4 ¼.

In the University of Indianapolis’ “Last Chance” Meet, the Greyhounds’ Mariah Judy was seventh of eight in the mile (5:43.77).

MENS INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

 Purdue’s Jalil Brewer placed third of 20 in the shot put (62-11 ¼) at the Big Ten Indoor Championships. Indiana’s Dom Day was 11th of 22 in the long jump (22-9).

Competing at Indianapolis’ Last Chance Meet, the Greyhounds’ Aaron Trejo was 13th of 15 in the mile (4:59.40), and teammate Hayden Baldwin was 12th in the 3000 (9:10.52).

Rose-Hulman’s Noah Thomas was named Heartland Conference Field Athlete of the Week following his win in the long jump at last week’s conference championship (21-6). He had previously been named Track Athlete of the Week.

Wabash’s Isaiah Campbell placed second of 11 in the shot put (44-5 ½) and seventh of 13 in the weight throw (45-11 ¼) in a three team meet with DePauw and Manchester. In a dual meet with Denison, he was second of nine in the shot put (44-9) and fourth of 11 in the weight throw (46-8).

In the Trine Home Meet No. 3, competing against Alma, Adrian, and Olivet, Trine’s Zach Brickler was eighth of 20 in the 3000 (9:37.90).

Fort Wayne’s Dona Fagnon, competing at the Horizon League Championships, placed seventh of 20 in the 60 meters (7.06-7.00 in the prelims), eighth of 21 in the 200 (22.54), and fourth of 14 in the 60 meter hurdles (8.47-8.0 in the prelims).

FOOTBALL

Marian (2-0) defeated Taylor 37-14. Sir’ Zion Dance intercepted two passes with runbacks of eight and five yards, and had seven solo tackles and three assisted tackles, one for a sack and another for a yard loss.

Manchester (0-2) has lost 37-0 to Trine and 41-10 to Adrian. Wayne Vaughn started at center for Manchester against Adrian. He did not play against Trine.
