Volleyball team finding improvements

Don’t be deceived by the girls volleyball team’s 5-11 record.

“Some of the team’s strengths are that there is a core group of girls that have played together for a couple years and are starting to see them playing together and supporting each other,” coach Stephanie Zeigler said. “Our offense has really improved from last year and our defense continues to develop.”

The Giants are heading into the home stretch of the 2020 season. They have three homes game left — including senior night on Thursday — and then play in the Marion County tourney before ending the regular season at Center Grove. Sectionals are scheduled to start on October 13 at Pike.

Team leaders this year include seniors Kimberly Witham and Lesey Landwerlen and junior Kansas Robinson. These girls are responsible for leading, encouraging and helping their teammates to succeed their goals.

Zeigler is happy with the progress the girls are making this season but realizes there is still work to do.

“Our team’s weaknesses are getting players to control their emotions and not get caught up in the moment,” Zeigler said. “Volleyball is sometimes more of a mental game than just a technical game.  Good volleyball comes from everyone quickly accepting that we did not win that last point but we can fight for the next one.  But we feel that we are improving on that as well.”
