Boys claim soccer sectional

Head to regionals for showdown with North Central

Staff report

The boys soccer team used two goals by senior Vicente Torres to secure a thrilling 2-1 overtime win against host Avon Saturday afternoon.

“It was amazing,” Torres said of the win. “We came together and played like a team.”

The Giants played two men down for almost 25 minutes due to card situations.

“I didn’t think it looked very good for us at one point,” Torres said. “We overcame.”

The win sets up a showdown with North Central at 10 a.m. at Carmel in the regionals. Ben Davis beat North Central 2-1 to claim the conference championship and then a week later lost 2-1 in the Marion County semi-finals to the Panthers. The winner of this Saturday’s game advances to the regional championship at 7 p.m.

The sectional championship is the sixth in school history and the first since 2009.
