Giants draw Northwest in sectional opener
Potential rematch vs. Southport looms
A potential boys basketball sectional championship for Ben Davis this season means an upset over one of the state’s top teams.
In the state tournament draw that was announced yesterday, Ben Davis drew the first game of the Perry Meridian sectional with as March 3 date at 6 p.m. against Northwest (2-16), a team the Giants beat 77-28 on Dec. 23. Should the Giants win that games, they will face Class 4A No. 2 Southport (20-2) on March 6 at 6 p.m.
Pike (14-8) will play Decatur Central (9-10) in the second game on March 3 with the winner facing Perry Meridian (11-9) in the second game on March 6. The championship game is at 7:30 p.m. March 7.
Ben Davis nearly beat Southport in the second game of the season before losing via a buzzer-beating shot that gave Southport a 55-52 win. Southport was supposed to play No. 1 Evansville Reitz this past weekend but the game was postponed to this Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
Ben Davis is 16-6 after beating Cathedral 61-55 in overtime on Friday. The Giants finish the regular season by visiting Franklin Central on Tuesday and Tech on Friday.
