Junior Vana Upshaw talks to a reporter during media day for the girls basketball team.
Don’t look now but the basketball season is tipping off Wednesday night when the Ben Davis Giants host Fishers in girls basketball season opener.
Young would be an appropriate description for the 2024-25 version of the lady Giants. The preseason roster has no seniors listed and only one player 5’10” or taller in junior Nevaeh Jackson.
“The preseason was good,” coach Stan Benge said. “We are trying to build a championship culture. We do not have any seniors playing this year. We have one senior Destiny Thompson who is providing leadership even though she is injured.”
The girls struggled through a 6-18 season last year and veteran coach Benge is counting on an uptempo high-pressure defensive unit to return to the lady Giants game plan.
“I think we will b tough to play against,” junior Vana Upshaw said. “We are practicing at a quick pace.”
After Wednesday’s season opener, the lady Giants travel to Hamilton Southeastern Saturday before hosting Brownsbug on Nov. 16.
