We are 53 days away from the 2024 presidential election and three days removed from what is likely the only debate between the two candidates – Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Kamala Harris.
We reached out to staff and students to get their opinions on the debate and this election cycle.
Junior Kelly Ambrocio-Vazquez: “Everyones rights are as important no matter your skin color or if you’re a woman. I appreciated Vice President Kamala Harris for talking about women’s rights and how a man should not be in charge of women’s bodies. They should consider each women’s story and feelings in the United States.”
Junior Adrhianna Diaz: “Watching the debate was interesting hearing both sides. It’s important to hear what they both have to say and what their plan’s are to make this country better. It’s also important because what they’re planning is what’s going to happen in the future. I feel as if Kamala knew more and was more confident in what she had planned. Which makes me feel more comfortable.”
Junior Marlene Romero: “When I watched clips about the debate I felt as if they were unprepared. When the women asked questions it felt as if they had a “plan”, but the plan was unknown. I feel as if they should be more prepared, especially because one of them is going to be our next president. We need a president who is determined and knows what’s better for the country.”
Sophomore Desron Beauchamp: “I thought the way Harris presented herself and went about things was actually great! She put herself into a great position ending that debate possibly gaining some swing state.”
Junior Josiah Cornner: “i feel that both presidents are strong debaters. However, I think Kamala will win it because she has shown her ability to argue and come up with things on the spot and her confidence is high throughout the whole debate/campaign process.”
Senior Robert Jones: “I don’t know much about the presidency or the candidates, but if I had to choose, I would pick Kamala Harris. Not only would she be the first female and Black president, but she is also focusing on crucial issues like healthcare, immigration, and climate change, which I believe are essential for 2025. I feel she would do an excellent job as president. On the other hand, Trump’s Project 2025 aims to implement many restrictive measures that could cause significant disruption. Hopefully, Kamala could potentially modify those plans while still addressing some of the project’s goals.”
Junior CJ Leonard: “I might not know too much about the race but I will say that I think Trump would be a great candidate. Involving his previous actions with presidential campaign. When quarantine hit he provided us with stimulus checks which helped a lot of people that was struggling with employment and financial issues.”
Sophomore Allison Hutts: “The debate was not everything it should have been.Trump’s tantrums and conspiracy theories definitely reminded people on why they don’t want to vote for him. Especially when he started talking about eating pets and how Kamala is not black. ”
Sophomore Kalie Bartron: “I feel like she (Kamala Harris) didn’t distinguish herself to the voters. Especially who probably don’t already know who she is.”
Sophomore Chloe Zimmerman: “It was silly, like, unserious.”
Dennis Goins, Principles Of Broadcasting teacher: “I hope to hear the truth about policies and what things would affect me and my family opposed to the evilness that these debates could turn into. Hopefully it was helpful to the public to see which candidate they should vote for and which candidate they shouldn’t vote for.”
Bill GilMartin, Latin teacher: “Kamala Harris pretty much won the debate, and I don’t think president Trump is going to want a second debate. She’s probably going to challenge him to a second debate. From everything I’ve read, he performed poorly, and shes a very strong debater.”
Senior Destiney Austin: “They weren’t really answering the right questions. Some of the stuff Donald Trump said were kinda racist too, like the cats and dogs kinda threw me off. I felt like they should’ve answered the questions instead of bringing up other things.”
