Coach Dani Oglesby and her daughter Dessy Evans have brought new excitement to the Ben Davis volleyball program.
The lady Giants sport a 4-4 record heading into tonight’s match at Speedway. Last year the girls won four games all season.
Oglesby spent last year as an assistant coach at Pike before taking over the BD program. In addition to trying to improve the on-court performance, the two have upped the teams presence on social media and are bringing a new excitement to the program.
Coach Oglesby is an Indiana native and graduated from North Central High School. Dessy is a middle blocker and an outside hitter.
Dessy stated that she does not remember how long she has played. “I don’t remember the exact number of years I’ve played, but I’ve played since I was 8 years old,” she said.
Dessy talks about how and why she decided to play volleyball.
“I used to do flag football, basketball, but my mom, after I quit dance, was like ‘You should try volleyball I played it in high school’,” Evans said.
Dessy stated that she likes volleyball due to the competitiveness.
“I feel like, well I’m middle, and outside, and I like the competitiveness. I am very, very, very competitive and volleyball’s just athletic in the positions I play and it’s also one of the hardest as well,” she said.
Dessy talks about what she gained this year to help her in the next years during volleyball.
“I’ve definitely gained more of a leadership role. I feel like I have a lot more leadership on my volleyball team than like clubs or school.”
Finally, Dessy talks about what she does to get everyone uplifted during a rough game/practice.
“I just encourage everybody, because once other people get uplifted, it uplifts me,” Evans said.
The girls play at Speedway tonight. Their next home game is September 19 against Park Tudor for Senior Night.
