Seniors Marissa Matthew and Sarah Ansert have been playing golf together since their freshman year and now they are in their senior year. Golf has really brought them together.
Matthew says that joining golf was a bet between her and Ansert. If one of them played the other had to play. Marissa says “the struggle of the game and people really brought us together.”
The pair begins their final days on the golf team Friday when sectional play begins.
Do you think you would be friends if you never joined golf? “Honestly no because me and her only became closer because of golf,” Matthew said.
What is your favorite thing about Sarah? “I can talk with no judgment from her and I’m always excited to tell her about my day and tell her the tea and gossip of the day/week.” Marissa says. “She is super nice she cares about me and supports me in everything I do which I love and she makes my day 100% better just by being there and listening to what I got to say even if it’s just nonsense”
Do you feel that you play better when you are together? “Yes I’m less sad and upset about the shots that I take because she’s there and makes me feel a lot better about it and we just joke and laugh the entire time” Marissa said.
What made you interested in playing golf? Ansert says “My sister made me interested in playing golf, she brought it up to me as she was on the golf team and explained that it would be a way for me to make some high school friends before I even reached the school. I talked with Marissa and we made a deal, if one of us joined then the other would do it as well, so here we are, seniors and golfing together still.”
How do you think golf made you gain such close relationships? “I think that golf made me gain such close relationships because it is such a small group of girls, and we have to spend hours with each other almost every day of the week during our season. It really makes it to where you have no choice but to get close lol, especially on the bus, which I can say is almost all the girl’s favorite part about golfing, especially when we get food and eat on the bus together after the match.”
Do you think you would be friends if you never joined golf? “With Marissa, I think that we would have remained mutual, but I don’t think that we would be anywhere near as close as we are now. I think we got really close over our mutual struggles with golf and the people that we meet in it”
What is your favorite thing about that person? “I think that Marissa is one of the funniest people I’ve met. She has always been able to make me laugh, especially if I am having a tough time golfing and she waves at me, it automatically makes me feel better. Also when we are practicing together, I know that there is no judgment for a bad shot, we both just laugh about it and move on to the next, it’s nice because she keeps it lighthearted for the both of us.”
Do you feel that you play better when you are together? “Yes. Most definitely! With being the golf captain it is difficult for me not to take the game too seriously, so I tend to get negative, which makes my game even worse.” sarah says. “But when we play together, it becomes lighter, I have someone to talk to, whether it is complaining or joking or talking about how the girl we are playing with is just plain cheating, playing with her makes the game go by faster and makes the game fun because we have each other to fall back on.”
