FedEx Cares supports student home-building project

Staff report

Employees from the FedEx hub in Indianapolis volunteered their time Friday to help students in a west-side home building project.
The construction trades students from the Area 31 Career Center at Ben Davis High School are nearing completion on a house at 5031 Caven Street in Wayne Township’s Drexel Gardens neighborhood. It’s the third home students from the program have built in the neighborhood. The project is a joint effort of the Metropolitan School District of Wayne Township, the Area 31 Career Center, and Indy Gateway. More than a dozen other partners are also involved.
FedEx Cares, the community outreach program operated by FedEx, provided 23 employees, mostly managerial staff, to do landscaping work around the house Friday.
“We’re so very grateful for the investment our community partners make in projects such as the home our students are building on Caven Street,” said MSD Wayne Superintendent Jeff Butts. “These partnerships are improving our students’ learning opportunities, and improving the quality of life on the west side of Indianapolis.”
An open house for the home will be held Wednesday, May 22, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
