Spotlight, Keyhole earn IHSPA recognition

The 2013-14 version of the Spotlight and the 2013 edition of the Keyhole each earned honorable mention in the annual Hoosier Star Awards handed out by the Indiana High School Press Association. Honorable mention is the second highest honor the IHSPA hands out each year.

The awards were handed out at Friday’s fall convention of the IHSPA at Franklin College.

Senior Tre Redeemar was a double winner this year, earning second place in spot news photography and third place for overall photo portfolio. Junior Cody Harrell won a second place in feature photography.

Other individual awards went to 2014 graduates Brandon Knop (honorable mention for feature writing) and Grace Ishikawa (honorable mention for sports photography).

The Spotlight staff also was awarded third in the state for online newspaper presence. Last year was the first year for the Spotlight to publish on online paper (bdspotlight.com). The Spotlight staff also earned second place for maestro package for a special package they published on the 50th anniversary of the Beatles first appearance on American television.

The Keyhole staff won third place for organizational spreads, third place for academic coverage and honorable mention for sports coverage.

In addition, junior Emily Rasmussen was voted on to the student governing board of the IHSPA. Ashley Shuler, a 2014 graduate, just finished her second and final year on the governing board.
