Students from all over Indianapolis help the Mayor
The Indianapolis Mayors Youth Council is a youth advocacy council sponsored by Mayor Greg Ballard. They advise the administration on youth issues, participate in community service projects and plan numerous of programs and meetings.
There are three students at Ben Davis in this council . They are: juniors Tynae Jefferson and Irving Salinas and sophomore Derrick Moore.
“I like helping people, that’s the big thing,” Jefferson said.
This trio of BD students are extremely community-minded. In addition to helping out the mayor, all three have helped make the community look better and helped the mothers and children at the Julian Center.
“At Ben Davis, we have only done community service this year,” Moore said. “I like being able to talk to people close to the Mayor because I would like to become a politician when I get older. Also, I like being a leader and helping the community.”
Moore volunteered at the Great Indy clean up October 26, 2013 at Paramount School of Excellence as part of his duties on the mayor’s council. Salinas likes to help the local communities by doing projects.
“Around June we’re going to the Julian Center,” Salinas said. “We also learn a lot and get to meet Mayor Greg Ballard. Lastly, it’s led by students and helps us prepare for the future.”
