One of Them Days is that kind of movie that makes you laugh and feel like you know exactly what it’s like to have your whole day go wrong.
The plot is simple but chaotic in a good way: Dreux (Keke Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA) are roommates who wake up to find out their rent money is gone because Alyssa’s boyfriend blew it. If they don’t come up with $1,500 by 6 p.m., they’ll be evicted.
On top of that, Dreux has a big job interview that could change everything, so there’s this ticking clock vibe that keeps everything stressful but hilarious. What really carries the movie is the friendship between Dreux and Alyssa.
Keke Palmer brings this energy where she’s hustling hard, trying to keep everything together, and SZA adds this creative, emotional side that sometimes messes things up, but you root for both of them all the way. They run through crazy scenes – blood donation gone wrong, loan sharks, wild neighborhood characters, all that – and even when you see the obstacles coming, it’s so fun watching how they try to fix their messes.
But it’s not perfect. Sometimes the jokes feel like they try too hard, or parts of the story get a little too over the top just to make things crazier. Also, some of the supporting characters aren’t fully developed, so moments that could be emotional end up kind of shallow. Still, the style, the setting, and the way it shows what it’s like to struggle without giving up that stuff hits.
