Good Riddance is worth a good listen

Abrams has a hit on her hands

Good Riddance is worth a good listen

Caitlin Merill

Releasing her first single in 2019, Gracie Abrams has already had a successful career with only releasing two EPs and without releasing her first album. She went on tour as an opening act for Olivia Rodrigo on her Sour Tour in 2022.

Later this year, she will be one of the many openers for Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour as well as that she’ll be going on tour – no longer as the opening act but the main act. She’ll be touring from March 6th to October 8th.

Even with her being what’s known in society as a nepotism baby due to her father being a director who’s directed movies such as the Star Wars movies and her mother being a film producer, Gracie has managed to make her career without the help of her families name and ties in Hollywood. Good Riddance is 12 songs in length with a running time of 52 minutes and 24 seconds. The album has been described as eavesdropping on a therapy session with how vulnerable the songs are. I’ve been listening to Gracie since 2020 before she released her first EP.

Best

The first track is probably my favorite song on the album.  My favorite lyric would have to be, “I destroyed every silver lining you had in your head.” I like that part of the song because it goes to show that sometimes people in your life whether they’re your friends or significant other can have different ideas of you in their head and sometimes you won’t live up to those expectations and that’ll disappoint the person who’s expectations you’re not living up to. I would give this song a 9 out of 10.

I Know It Won’t Work

This song is probably another one of my favorite songs from the album. The song gives me the vibes of someone whose relationship ended and they miss that relationship and want it back but know it’s not possible to get back together due to the way the relationship ended. In my opinion, the best lyric of this song is, “Part of me wants to walk away ’til you really listen. I hate to look at your face and know that we’re feelin’ different. Cause part of me wants you back but I know it won’t work like that.” I would probably give this song an 8 out of 10.

Full Machine

This track is probably my least favorite on the album. It’s not an overall bad song, but it’s not as good as the rest of the album. The vibe of the song gives off the person who’s not been able to move on from a past relationship missing the person they were previously in a relationship with while the person they were in a relationship with has moved on from the relationship and left that person in their past. My favorite lyric is “I had a life here before you but now it’s burning.” I would give this song a ranking of 5 out of 10. It’s not a bad song, it’s just not for me.

Where Do We Go Now?

This song was the first single from the album to be released usually the singles aren’t my favorites but this is probably the first single that I’ve liked just as much as the rest of the album. My favorite part would have to be, “You look hopeful like we’re supposed to work somehow. Can’t you tell our light burned out?” This song gives the vibes of a relationship that’s not going to work but one of the people in the relationship is hopeful for the relationship while the other has accepted that the relationship is doomed no matter what you do. I’d give this song a 7 out of 10. It was a good song for it being single but I didn’t feel like it fit with the rest of the songs on the album.

I Should Hate You

This song gives off the vibe of a relationship ending badly but one of the people in the relationship is going through some hard times and the other person tries to be there for their former partner but it doesn’t work and the person trying to help the other through a hard time comes to terms that with all the times the other person has put them through that they should hate them but they don’t because they loved that person for so long. My favorite part would be, “And I’d drive to your house for the s**t that you went through. Then I wasted my breath when I tried to console you, didn’t I?” I would rank this song an 8 out of 10. It was overall a good song but there wasn’t anything that made it stand out to me.

Will You Cry

To me, this song gives off the vibe of a relationship ending and one person still hoping that the other cares about them or essentially as the title says if they’d cry over that person. I’m not the biggest fan of this song but my favorite part of this song would probably have to be, “It’s kind of funny when it goes from all to nothing, you have to laugh before you start to cry.” I would probably give this song a 7 out of 10.

Amelie

This song gives the vibes of a long-term friendship ending and one friend missing that person because they’ve changed so much the person starts to think they made that person up because they’ve changed so much from who that person was when they were friends. My favorite part is,  “All I can do is hope that this will go away.” I would give this song a 10 out of 10. For it is the second single from the album I surprisingly liked the song.

Difficult

This song is probably my least favorite song of the album. It’s not a bad song, it’s just not my type of song. If I had to pick the best lyric it would be, “Grieving, but over what I never had, so I’ve been speaking to my therapist, I call her every weekend.” I would give the song a 6 out of 10 ranking

This Is What Dr*gs Are For

This song gives off the vibe of someone leaving their hometown for college and leaving their past life behind but once they get to when they’re going they miss themselves and the people that were in their life at that point and time. My favorite part is, “Look how I just lost a friend, I’m burying your things inside my bedroom. Old distractions, in the end, don’t work.” I’d give it a 9 out of 10 because it’s a song where even if you haven’t experienced a situation like that it makes you feel like you have.

Fault Line

This is probably my favorite song on this album. It gives off the vibes of being in a relationship where you don’t know if what you’re feeling is actually real or all a trick in your head. It also could be seen as a relationship where none of your friends are really supportive of it because your partner isn’t the best part. My absolute favorite part of this song is,  “And all of my imaginary friends are scared of you. I’ve gone and cried to them in our bedroom.” I would rank this a 10 out of 10.

The Blue

This song isn’t my favorite but it’s not my least favorite. I kind of relate to it which is probably the main reason why I like the song. The lyric I like the best is most likely, “You say we share a brain, apologizing for it, but take it as a compliment. You make me really nervous.” It gives off the vibe of starting a new relationship after a previous relationship hurt them a lot so they’re nervous to start dating again. I would give this a 9 out of 10.

Right Now

I don’t have a lot to say about this song. To some people, it’s probably a good song but I just couldn’t like it. I re-listened to it a lot of times and it never got to the point where I liked the song. It’s not a bad song overall but it’s not a good song. If I had to pick a part of the song I liked best it would be, “Am I losin’ my family every minute I’m gone?” I would give this song a 6 out of 10.

Overall I loved this album. I may be biased due to my immense love for Gracie’s music but I thought it was a great album especially for it being a debut album. I would give the album an overall ranking of 9 out of 10. The album had me wishing that Gracie would come to Indiana during her tour but there’s always next time.
