COLLEGE ALUMNI UPDATE

Week of February 18

SOFTBALL

Eastern Illinois (6-3) defeated South Dakota State 6-1, South Carolina State 7-1, and North Florida 14-12, and lost 6-2 to North Florida and 4-0 to Kansas.  Kayla Bear had 11 hits in 20 at bats in the five games, raising her batting average to .529 (18 for 34). Two of her hits were home runs, and one was a double. In addition, she scored 10 runs, had four RBIs , and stole seven bases in seven attempts.

Indiana Wesleyan (6-1) lost 2-1 to Cleary and defeated Albion 12-1, Concordia 10-3, and St. Joseph’s 9-6 and 3-2. Statistics are not available for the St. Joseph’s wins.  Kaisey Carson had seven hits, including two doubles,  in 11 at bats in the first three games and was batting .667 (12 for 18) prior to the two games with the Pumas. The 6’2” senior also scored three runs, had four RBIs, and stole one base.  Carson (2-1) was the pitcher in the 2-1 loss and started and got the win in the 10-3 defeat of Concordia. In 12 innings in the two games, she gave up 14 hits, three earned runs and one walk and struck out five.

BASEBALL

Marian (2-2) split four games with Blue Mountain (MS). Cody Turpen played in two of the games and was one for three at the plate, scored one run, and was caught stealing on his only try.

MEN’S TENNIS

Jacob Volbers won 8-4 at No. 3 doubles for Ohio Wesleyan’s only point in an 8-1 loss to Wisconsin-Whitewater. The junior lost 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 singles. In a 5-4 loss to Wheaton, Volbers won 8-2 at No. 2 doubles.

WRESTLING

Purdue defeated 17th ranked South Dakota State 20-19, with the final point coming on criteria.  Both teams had won five bouts; but Purdue won one by  fall, giving them the winning point. The Boilers’ Dylan Lydylost 7-1 at 165 pounds.

MEN’S INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

Competing for Marian in the Crossroads League Invitational, Moussa Conde won both the 60 and 200 meter dashes, finishing first of 24 in the 60 (6.84) and first of 21 in the 200 (22.02). Teammate Aaron Murray was fourth of 20 in the 400 meter dash in 50.85.

Dallas Pitts helped Wabash finish first of 11 teams at the DePauw Indoor Classic by winning the shot put in a field of 27 with a throw of 45-10 1/3.

Indiana State’s Marcus Neely won the 60 meter hurdles in 7.89 at the Eastern Illinois Friday Night Special.

Illinois State’s Jordan Wilkerson was third of eight in the high jump (6-5 ½) and 12th of 12 in the 60 meter hurdles (9.54) at the Orange and Blue Open at the University of Illinois. Illinois’ Luke Brahm started in the mile race but was unable to finish.

Franklin’s Nate Adams was 10th of 29 in the weight throw (45-8) and 19th of 29 in the shot put (38-8 ½)  for sixth place Franklin at the Heartland Conference Invitational.

Indianapolis’ Jordan Boyd was 11th of 13 in the weight throw (52-10 ¾) at the Ohio State Tuneup.

WOMEN’S INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

Marian’s Destiny Patterson was ninth of 17 in the 200 meter dash (28.16) and eighth of 16 in the 60 meters (8.28) at the Crossroads League Invitational.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Ancilla (13-9, 7-7) lost 62-39 to Grand Rapids. Shae Daniels had seven points (2 for 3, 1 for 1, 2 for 2), three rebounds, one steal, and two turnovers in 20 minutes in the loss; and Shelle Daniels had 11 points (4 for 13, 1 for 6, 2 for 8), three rebounds, four steals, and six turnovers in 31 minutes .

Texas State (14-11, 9-5) defeated Georgia State 62-51 and lost 71-69 to Georgia Southern. Amber Joneshad eight points (2 for 5, 0 for 0, 4 for 4) one rebound, one assist, and one steal in 21 minutes in the win; and three points (1 for 2, 0 for 0, 1 for 3), two rebounds, two blocked shots, one steal, and two turnovers in 20 minutes in the loss.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Vermont (24-5, 14-0) defeated University of Massachusetts-Lowell 87-66. Harry “Dre” Wills had nine points (4 for 6, 0 for 0, 1 for 2), four rebounds, five assists, three steals, and two turnovers in 29 minutes for the winners.

Ohio State (15-13, 5-10) lost 74-66 to Michigan State and 58-57 to Nebraska. Trevor Thompson had six points (2 for 4, 0 for 0, 2 for 2), seven rebounds, and one blocked shot In 21 minutes against the Spartans; and 13 points (6 for 9, 0 for 0, 1 for 2), eight rebounds, and one turnover in 30 minutes against the Cornhuskers.

Northern Kentucky (18-10, 9-6) defeated Cleveland State 62-60 and lost 81-77 to Youngstown. Brennan Gillis had two points (1 for 3), one rebound, and one turnover in eight minutes against Cleveland State; and six points (3 for 4) one rebound, and one assist in nine minutes against Youngstown.

Illinois State (23-5, 15-1) defeated Missouri State 67-66 and Loyola (IL) 65-63. Tony Wills had 12 points (5 for 10, 1 for 5, 1 for 1), one rebound, and two steals in 26 minutes against Missouri State; and nine points (3 for 6, 3 for 6, 0 for 0), two rebounds, one assist, three steals, and two blocked shots in 28 minutes against Loyola.

Naeem Freeman had two points (1 for 3), five rebounds, one steal, two blocked shots, and one turnover for Southwestern Illinois Community College (11-13, 5-8) in a 69-57 loss to Shawnee.
