Girls golfers finish second in county

Fishburn goes to playoff before finishing second

The girls golf team came out firing in the Marion County Tournament.

The lady Giants were led by sophomore Danielle Fishburn, who found herself in a situation that she hasn’t yet experienced. After she fired a personal best 79, she was in a playoff with an experienced senior from Roncalli for first place.

The two remained tied through the first three playoff holes with pars, but Fishburn fell short on the final hole. Coach Dave Patz had nothing but good things to say about his talented sophomore.

“She had an outstanding day, as did the team,” Patz said.

The team lost by two strokes to Roncalli. They feel as if they could have won County, but for now they are happy with their best finish of the season. Senior Ellie Neff finished in sixth place as an individual with an 84. She was followed by senior Claire Thompson who finished in seventh with an 86.

Fishburn, Thompson and Neff all earned All-County honors for finishing in the top 10. They have a long road ahead of them as they head into the second half of their season. They have started strong and they will try to keep that pace up as sectionals approach.
