Senior Breanna Cooper (middle) poses with the other six finalists for state journalist of the year Friday at the Indiana Statehouse.

Senior Breanna Cooper was recognized Friday at the Indiana Statehouse as one of the top seven high school journalists in the state.

Cooper was a finalist for the Indiana Journalist of the Year as awarded by the Indiana High School Press Association. Cooper is the editor of the Spotlight and plans to study journalism at Indiana University next year. Junior Emily Rasmussen also spoke at the First Amendment Symposium, which is the annual event that recognizes the state’s top high school journalists.

Cooper is the fourth Ben Davis student to be a finalist for this award in the past five years. Ashley Shuler was a finalist last year and both Hannah Ishikawa and Lauren Chapman were finalists in 2011.
