There is a giant and scary venus fly trap coming to Ben Davis. This March the Ben Davis theatre department will be presenting their second main stage production of the year. The upcoming play is Little Shop of Horrors.

Little Shop of Horrors is comedy-drama about a nerdy scientist named Seymour. Seymour works at the flower shops and acquires a venus fly trap that he names Audrey II in honor of the his colleague Audrey who he is loved with. It isn’t long until Seymour discovers that Audrey II feeds on human blood and Audrey II becomes the infamous monster in town.

The story Little Shop of Horrors is a cult classic that has been loved by many for years.  The story was adapted into the movie version that released in 1960 and later remade in 1987.  Even more recently the musical version of Little Shop of Horrors has played on Broadway in multiple theatres around the world.  Ben Davis will be performing the play version and this specific version was written by theatre director Kristopher Owens.

Junior Amelia Corbin is playing Hortense Fishtwanger. Although she has been involved in several plays she feels like this upcoming play will be different from previous plays.

“This play will be fun. It features a lot of slapstick comedy so there will be a lot of funny parts.” Corbin said. “I think there are some funny bits everybody will laugh at.”

Corbin also thinks that the set design will be fascinating for audiences.

“The props are definitely more interesting this time. Since we are using them show how the show moves along. Most of the props aren’t just inanimate objects so it definitely makes in more fun.” Corbin said.

Ben Davis’ production of Little Shop of Horrors sets and props will be in the show such as the venus fly trap, Audrey II, that grows throughout the show and also the flower shop set will both be interesting additions on stage.

The cast and crew have been preparing for the play for the past several weeks, so audiences can expect an entertaining show. Little Shop of Horrors opens on Friday March 6 at 7 p.m. and is also on Saturday, March 7 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $5.
