Old rocket meets new fizz

A look at the new store Rocket Fizz

Candy has fascinated us for a long time. Whether old or new, candy creates happiness.

A new store called Rocket Fizz has become a home for not only candy, but other odds and ends.

Rocket Fizz is your old fashioned candy and pop shop with a new twist. From old style taffy to imported candy, this shop is full of various sweet tooth choices. Besides candy, the store also sells cardboard cutouts of people, vintage movie posters, and small knic-knacs like dashboard bacon.

The history of Rocket Fizz starts goes back seven years. Co-owners Robert Powells and Ryan Morgan wanted to live life to its fullest while still making a living. After years of planning, importing and negotiating, they opened the first “flagship” store in Camarillo, California.

Soon after, Rocket Fizz became a hit and began spreading through America reaching places like Utah, Florida and now Indiana. However, there is a catch. Instead of being a company owned franchise, other shops are independently owned and operated by people in their states, like the two here in Indiana.

Regarding the two shops in Indiana, both are owned by John Nething and his wife. Nething has just opened his shops and sees Rocket Fizz as a wonderland.

“Rocket Fizz is a shop that is place that creates a fun atmosphere,” Nething said. “It’s a place where people can come and see old style and new style props. Things like vintage music and posters are common attributes with Rocket Fizz. It is also a place where people can reminisce on old memories while creating new ones as well.”

The candies at all Rocket Fizz shops go beyond our own American boundaries. Things like scorpion suckers to edible worms may gross out some, but that is all part of the experience.

“My favorite soda would have to be Root Beer,” Nething said. “We have 60 different kinds to choose from, so the options are varied. I like the old candy Aba Daba and the Japanese candy Jubs, which are cubed candies dipped in fruit juice.”

Their candy is shipped from many different places. The American candy is a simple delivery. However, candy from Great Britain, Germany, and Australia are shipped from there to Los Angeles to the store. The same goes for the Japanese candy except it goes through San Francisco.

The most popular candy at the store is the Jubs and the Hi Chews. For those who like Starburst, Hi Chews are just that but with a flavor that taste like the actual fruit. Both are from Japan and are new sweet tooth cravers.

Nething thinks that the main reason to visit Rocket Fizz is for the experience.

“People should come to just have a good time,” he said. “It is a chance for them to step out of the box and to try something new.”
