 Deer Hunting in Eagle Creek

Last week hunters made their way into Eagle Creek Park for the second controlled deer hunt within the park. These hunts are part of a controversial plan to reduce deer populations in the park.

Indianapolis officials claim that the overpopulation of deer is harming the ecosystem. Hunters were allowed to hunt in the park after the park closed and used suppressors as not to bother the people living near the park.

While many argue that the hunts help to control populations, many feel that these hunts are inhumane to deer. Further, many feel that hunting in a public park is too dangerous. The venison from this hunt will go to local food pantries.

Unfortunately, the terror did not end there. Starting on January 3, Boko Haram opened fire in Northern Nigerian villages, leaving as many as 2,000 people dead. Amnesty International claims that this act of terror could be Boko Haram’s deadliest attack.

He called for an additional $200 million to be put towards secondary education, including $41 million dollars put towards charter schools. This plan caused a reaction on social media, with teachers from around the state questioning the governor’s plan. This annual speech was especially important for governor Pence this year, seeing as he is weighing a 2016 presidential bid.

NASCAR’s Jeff Gordon set to retire

Jeff Gordon said today that his stock car racing career is coming to a close. Gordon made the announcement at Hendrick Motorsports, the only team he’s ever known in the Cup series.

“I’m proud of the career I’ve had & knew this day would come, but I’ll be involved with @TeamHendrick for many years to come,” he wrote on Twitter.

Gordon, a four-time Cup champion and winner of 92 races (third all-time), entered his first Cup race in 1992, which coincided with Richard Petty’s retirement. His series titles came in 1995, ’97, ’98 and 2001.

He has won the Brickyard 400 a record five times, including the first year (1994) and last year (2014). Gordon was born in Vallejo, Calif., but he spent his formative years in Pittsboro, Ind., graduating from Tri-West High School. He will be 44 in August and has been plagued by back problems in recent years.

Police search for young suspect on west side

Police are searching for a young boy they suspect robbed a Westside CVS store with a threatening note on Monday.

About 11:25 a.m., the boy entered the CVS pharmacy at 5502 W. 38th St. and demanded pills using a handwritten note, an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department report said. The note stated that this was a robbery and included a list of drugs the boy wanted the pharmacist to hand over. His note also implied that he would kill everyone in the store if the alarm button was pressed.

The boy then fled on foot with the drugs in a brown CVS paper bag, police said. Witnesses told investigators the boy was 10 to 13 years old, was 5 feet tall with a small build and had a light to medium complexion.
